CAUTION! – Don’t Get Me Wrong :-)

banner-1165980_960_720

I’m a passionate guy and I communicate passionately.  Translation:  I can be loud and rather harsh when I am trying to get my point across.  A few times in the past I have seen how people mistakenly interpret my best attempts at communicating, what I thought was something insightful and true, as harsh and accusative.

Just this week I explained a challenging situation to a colleague and he very eloquently replied that he does not truly know the other party involved in the situation and at the receiving end of my communication.  He did however know me and suggested that instead of reaffirming my point, simply ask the other person how they understood what I said, i.e. what did they hear?

Now, I have been facilitating for years and have hundreds of hours of coaching under my belt but when I am emotionally involved the game changes in an instant.  I have to remind myself of what I potentially sound like and I should perhaps come with a warning that reads “CAUTION! Don’t get me wrong.”

Perhaps we should come with some sort of warning sign – “CAUTION! – I bite” or “CAUTION! – I cry easily” or even “CAUTION! – I withdraw when confronted”.

Perhaps we will approach one another with a bit of a different perspective.  Perhaps we will get a little better at this living thing.

Adventures into the Unknown

adventureFor over a decade I have been exploring various roles, organisations, industries and tools to affect my influence for the greater good as far as possible.  From my varsity days I was restless (I guess I still am a bit).  Always hungry; always searching for more MEANING!  Adventures into the unknown!

And yet every day I look around at the majority of people and how happy they are to simply accept their lot in life and tell themselves that “I guess I will never have a better relationship” or “I can’t get over my addiction”.  But I guess that if you are reading this you are already one of the few who look for answers; who search for life!

That fact of the matter is that our collective consciousness is driven by the mass media and we are very happy to simply go with the flow (Yes, I am a stuck record, but the message needs to be repeated).

Few realise that the world of work is changing dramatically.   Continue reading “Adventures into the Unknown”

The Tyranny of the Or

dark alleyMany years ago I encountered a great concept in a book by Jim Collins – The Tyranny of the Or – because in our dichotomous world; our binary reality of this OR that; ones and zeros, we so often are convinced that the answer lies in one OR the other.  I am sure there are some of you out there saying I get this and I know where you are heading with this…  “It is not one or the other it is both!”

…And, yes!  You are absolutely correct, it is that simple.  I agree, and yet it never stops surprising me that every so often I end up in a dark alley of despair with an unseen menace heading my way.  There is no way out and I can feel my heart in my chest pounding away. Faster and faster and faster!  It’s like in the movies, if I only look up I will notice a ladder hanging just above my head.  Yes, the alley is a dead end but it is also a new beginning or a means of escape.
